| Hokkaido's railway system is operated by JR Hokkaido (www.jrhokkaido.co.jp), has about 2500km network to major cities. Most limited express trains
depart and arrive at Sapporo, Hokkaido Shinkansen (bullet train) will be
operating from May 2016 between Shin Aomori and Southern Hokkaido (north
of Hakodate). Major stations offers luggage lockers (not 24-hour) and ticket
windows (midori no madoguchi). |

Sapporo Station has freaquent services to the following destinations in
Hokkaido.
Abashiri: Limited express 5.5 hours via Asahikawa / runs between 7am and 5pm
Asahikawa: Limited express 80 minutes / runs every 30 minutes between 6am and 11pm
(basically)
Hakodate: Limited express 3.5 hours via Tomakomai / runs between 7am and 7pm
Kushiro: Limited express 4 hours via Obihiro / runs between 7am and 7pm
Muroran: Limited express 1.5 hours / runs between 7am and 8pm
Niseko: Local 2 hours / Change in Otaru / runs between 6am and 9pm
New Chitose Airport: Rapid 36 minutes / runs every 15 minutes between 6am and 10pm (basically)
Obihiro: Limited express 2.5 hours / runs between 7am and 8pm
Otaru: Rapid 34 minutes / runs every 30 minutes between 9am and 8pm
Tomakomai: Limited express 45 minutes and Local 1 hour / runs between 6am and 10pm

Limited Express (Tokkyu: 特急)
Intercity train services has 2nd-class reserved seats (Jiyu-seki: 自由席)
and non-reserved seats (Shitei-seki: 指定席), long distance train offers 1st-class
Green Car (Green-sha: グリーン車) and attendants selling snacks / lunch boxes
/ coffee / souvenirs. If you take the limited express train, need a basic
fare (Futsu Joshaken: 普通乗車券) plus a limited express ticket (Tokkyu-ken:
特急券). As an exception, you not need buy a limited express ticket (non-reserved
seat only) between Shin-Yubari and Shintoku, plus between Kanita and Kikonai. |

Hokkaido Rail Pass
If you have temporary visitor entry status, you can purchase this pass
at the Sapporo Station west gate JR information dest (8:30 - 19:00), New
Chitose Airport Station, Twinkle plaza, Noboribetsu Station and Abashiri
Station. Valid on all trains and JR local buses within JR Hokkaido Area,
between three days and seven days (including fexible type four days). |
